On Friday’s Battleground State Report with Michael Patrick Leahy and Doug Kellett – a one-hour radio show from Star News Digital Media in the early stages of national weekend syndication roll out- Leahy and Kellett discussed last weeks Democratic debate in Houston and how the moderators avoided asking important questions.
Further on in the show, Leahy asked if Kellet had ever seen in the history of presidential debates the question about the economy avoided.
Leahy: We had yet another Democratic debate in Houston this past week. All ten of them. The ten leading contenders got on the stage and not one word said about the economy. Not one word said about Elizabeth Warren’s false claims of Native American ancestry. Were you shocked about that Doug?
Kellett: No. You know they’re not going to ask that. Certainly in the Democrat primary. I don’t even think any of the other candidates at any point Michael will actually bring it up, to be honest with you. I don’t think that’s going to come up. When it comes up if Elizabeth Warren were to get the nomination it will be because Donald Trump brings it up. (Chuckles)
I don’t think you’re going to get that from the panel. I was surprised that there was no discussion about the economy. A lot of healthcare again discussion at that debate last week and that kind of thing. But you would think the economy they would at least spend some time about it.
Because after all, there is a Democrat view versus the way that the Trump economy is going. It may not be a good argument. May not be something they can make. I thought at least the people asking the questions would have asked about it right?
Leahy: Why didn’t George Stephanopoulos, you know the former Clinton guy, why didn’t he ask about it? Why didn’t David Muir? Why didn’t Jorge ‘I hate Donald Trump’ Ramos ask that question? (Kellet giggles)
Kellett: We know what the Democrat response would be. But yet the audience, it’s a Democrat primary. They would love it. “Yes, the economy may be working for some. It’s working for the rich. But it’s not working for the average guy. It’s not working for the union guy.” Or whatever.
There is a way they would twist it anyway. Whatever the statistics are. Yeah, the fact it wasn’t asked. I mean so, George Stephanopoulos leading the panel there on ABC, they don’t consider that to be an important election issue when most presidential elections are kind of centered about that?
Leahy: Well James Carville said, “It’s the economy stupid” famously back in 1992 right? (Kellett laughs)
Kellett: Yeah, he worked with James Carville right?
Leahy: He forgot that question apparently right?
Kellett: Well it didn’t come up. And you asked me was I shocked. Yeah. I was about that. I kept waiting for a question or two. I think the healthcare debate is really centered on this Medicare for all that Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren continue to put forth. They have different versions of it. Even Joe Biden.
Now think about this, the leading candidate on the Democrat side, or at least according to the polls was actually making the case saying, “Wait a minute. This is going to cost too much.” He was like, “My plan costs a lot.”
